Surgical Abortion Side Effects

Since the decision to have an abortion is life changing, it is important to weigh all options in order to make the best choice for yourself and your health. Although a surgical abortion is considered very safe and is a common method for terminating a pregnancy, as with all medical procedures, there are possible complications or side effects that can occur.

Common Side Effects

According to Web MD, the following are a few side effects of a surgical abortion that are fairly common and should cause no alarm: irregular bleeding or spotting for as long as the first three weeks, cramping for the first two weeks and emotional reactions for two to three weeks.

Other Possible Side Effects

Although most surgical abortions have a maximum recovery time of about three weeks, sometimes there are more serious side effects that signal a need for follow-up care. Even though the following side effects are rare, if any of these side effects are experienced, medical care is needed immediately.

Infection

Retained pregnancy components, an undiagnosed STD, or Pelvic Inflammatory Disease may contribute to an infection. Signs of an infection in the entire body include headaches, muscle aches or dizziness. Also, any pain, swelling or redness in the genital area is an indication that there may be an infection that requires medical attention.

Excessive Bleeding

The surgical procedure may cause unusual bleeding if the uterine muscles or blood vessels do not constrict properly. According to Web MD, signs of excessive bleeding are passing clots that are bigger than a golf ball, soaking more than two large pads in an hour, or bleeding heavily for twelve hours in a row.

Severe Abdominal Pain

If severe pain in the abdomen exists even after medication and rest, then the body may not be healing properly, and medical attention is needed.

Lacerated Cervix

If the cervix is accidentally cut or torn, stitches are required to stop the bleeding. If the cervix becomes injured during the procedure, it may prevent a future successful pregnancy, although this particular side effect is extremely rare and can often be fixed with surgery.
