which-scanners-will-scan-negatives-slides

Certain scanners have the ability to scan 35mm film negatives and slides.

With the increased popularity in digital photography and cameras, people interested in keeping pictures from 35mm slides or negatives have turned to scanning technology. Numerous well-known companies have adapted flatbed scanners, as well as small, stand-alone scanners, for the ability to scan slides or negatives. These scanners can even enhance faded negatives and slides to sharpen an older and deteriorated image.

Hewlett Packard (HP)

Some HP flatbed scanners have a feature called a transparent materials adapter (TMA) that allows a person to scan various numbers of slides or negatives. The HP Scanjet G4050 Photo Scanner can scan up to 16 slides or 30 negatives at one time, allowing a much faster turnaround for people with a large quantity of slides or negatives to scan.

Epson

The Epson Perfection V500 Photo Scanner carries a Transparency Unit (TPU), similar to HP's TMA feature, to scan 35mm negatives and slides. This particular flatbed scanner can scan up to 12 negatives or 4 slides at a time, but can scan medium-format film as well.

Canon

Canon also offers a range of flatbed scanners that, with the help of a built-in 3mm film adapter, can scan a different number of slides and negatives depending on the model. One of the newer models, the CanoScan 9950F, scans the largest amount of either 30 negatives or 12 mounted slides.

Silicon Valley Peripherals (SVP)

Silicon Valley Peripherals offers a wide variety of stand-alone scanners for 35mm slides and negatives. SVP's scanners offer the ability to scan a slide and save it as a five-megapixel image on an SD memory card, eliminating the need to connect to a computer. Most of the scanners offered by SVP can scan two to four slides or negatives at a time by placing the slides or negatives into a plastic tray.
