Replace A Windshield Washer Pump For A 1992 Subaru Legacy

Damage to the windshield washer pump occurs most often from a short circuit. This typically happens from driving through large puddles that splash up into the lower engine compartment. The washer pump attaches to the bottom of the washer fluid reservoir. Spillage from overfilling the reservoir can also short out the pump. With a few tools, the windshield washer pump in your 1992 Subaru Legacy can be replaced right at home. The job should take you 25 minutes to complete.

Instructions

1. Raise the hood of your Legacy and locate the windshield washer reservoir. The reservoir sits on the right side of the engine compartment. It's made of a clear, whitish-looking plastic and has a yellow cap on it.

2. Remove the two nuts on the side of the reservoir that secure it to the Legacy's engine compartment with a socket wrench. Lift the reservoir up from its position and set it down on the side of the fender. Pull the small hose off the front of the washer pump manually.

3. Note the position of the two push-on wires connected to the washer pump. Disconnect both of the wires by pulling them off their connections by hand. Don't pull them off by their wires; grab the little metal connectors when you're disconnecting them.

4. Insert a funnel into an empty, 1-gallon bottle or jug. Lift the cap on the washer fluid reservoir and carefully pour its contents into the bottle.

5. Grasp the washer pump with one hand and hold the reservoir steady with your other hand. Twist and turn the washer pump back and forth, while pulling it outward, to free it from the reservoir. The pump is held in place by the black rubber grommet that you pulled it away from. Discard the old pump and install the new one.

6. Turn and wiggle the new washer pump while pushing it down into the rubber grommet until it is completely seated. Set the reservoir back onto the edge of the fender. Connect both of the push-on wires to the washer pump in their correct positions. Push the small hose back onto its connecting spot at the front of the washer pump by hand.

7. Lower the reservoir into its mounting position in the engine compartment. Thread both of the reservoir's mounting nuts by hand. Secure the nuts in place with the socket wrench. Fill the reservoir with the fluid that you poured into the bottle. Test your Legacy's new washer pump to ensure it works correctly.
