Shrink With A Planishing Hammer

When working with sheet metal, you may need to flatten out a domed or curved piece of metal. If you just tried striking the dome or curve, the metal would distort and wouldn't look smooth. Instead, use a planishing hammer with a shrinking die. You can shrink the metal, causing the dome to flatten out and keep the surrounding metal intact. This takes some practice, but you can do it by investing in a little bit of time.

Instructions

1. Install the shrinking die set into the planishing hammer per the directions with your hammer kit. Put on the gloves. Slide the domed or curved piece of sheet metal between the two dies and hold onto the metal firmly with both hands.

2. Step on the foot trigger to activate the planishing hammer. Move the metal around the planishing hammer, starting at one edge of the area you need flattened and working back and forth to the other side of the area you need flattened.

3. Flip the sheet metal 90 degrees to its previous position. Work the metal from side-to-side again, using the same technique you applied in the previous step. Flip the piece 90 degrees a third time and continue to work out the dome until it is perfectly flat.
