Easy Ways To Update Bathrooms

A pretty towel shelf with hooks is an easy update for your bathroom.

While a handyman might think that switching out light fixtures, retiling the floor or installing a new faucet are easy jobs, these projects aren't so easy for many homeowners. If you'd like to update your bathroom but have minimal remodeling expertise, there are some super-simple ways your can give your bath a fresh look, and the most complicated tools required are a paintbrush and screwdriver.

New Bath Linens

Probably the easiest update is new bath linens. New towels always freshen a bath, but don't stop there. Complete the look with a new bath rug and shower curtain. Whether you're decorating your own serene spa-like bathroom or a neon green primping station for a teen, go all out and find a shower curtain that elevates your bathroom's decor to the next level. Shower curtains are often the largest decorative item in a bathroom, so choose one that makes an impact.

A Fabulous Mirror

While plate-glass mirrors are functional, they don't add any style or flair to your bathroom. Replace your plate-glass mirror with a framed mirror to add warmth, architectural interest and definition. Defining the mirror with a frame takes your mirror from being the equivalent of a blank wall to a framed work of art. Just because it's a bathroom doesn't mean the mirror must be plain. Find one that's fabulous and it will serve as the room's focal point.

New Hardware

Builders often supply bathrooms with the plainest, most inexpensive hardware they can find. These towel bars, towel rings, toilet tissue holders and cabinet knobs lack personality and don't contribute to the room's style at all. Shop around for some beautiful or unusual pieces in antique glass knobs, rusty iron, polished chrome or swirly wrought iron.

A Fabulous Rug

While a fluffy new bath rug that perfectly matches your fluffy new towels is a nice update, take it even further with with a rug that's a little unexpected. Consider a rich Oriental rug or a colorful rag rug. Quaint braided rugs, shag rugs and flokati rugs are also inventive choices. Avoid wool and silk in the bathroom, but go ahead with most cottons and synthetics.

Paint

Bathrooms are typically small rooms, so they don't take much time or supplies to make over with paint, If your room is small, go ahead and choose a strong color, since the room is small enough that the color won't be overpowering. You can choose a light and bright color to make the room more cheerful. Because bathrooms are small, they're a smart place to try new paints or techniques before attempting them in a larger room. For example, if you've been considering trying your hand at painting metallics, stripes, borders or faux finishes, test these techniques in your bathroom and make it over at the same time.
