Install Trafficmaster Ceramica Resilient Vinyl Tile Flooring

Trafficmaster Ceramica vinyl floor tiles are touted to offer a realistic ceramic look at a fraction of the cost of ceramic tile. The peel-and-stick application is generally quicker and easier to install than ceramic tile, making this flooring option attractive to homeowners who like to do their own remodeling. Ceramica tiles can be used with or without grout, and can be replaced or repaired if damaged.

Instructions

1. Remove baseboards with a utility knife or putty knife if they can be loosened without damage to the wall or paint. Label the baseboards with pencil for easy replacement after the vinyl tile is laid.

2. Prepare the subfloor to ensure it is level. Remove lumps or debris embedded in the floor. Wash old tile with mild soap or detergent to remove wax or buildup. Rinse the floor well. Make sure the floor is completely dry before you proceed.

3. Check for square corners and straight walls by dry-fitting a tile into each corner of the room. Stretch a chalk line between the corners of each pair of tiles to find the center point of the room. Pull the chalk line taut, then snap it on the floor. Snap a second chalk line at a right angle to the first chalk line to divide the room into four equal spaces.

4. Peel the backing off the first Ceramica tile, and place it at the point where the chalk lines cross in the center of the room. Press the tile firmly into the floor. Peel the backing off another tile, and align the edge to the first tile. Follow with a row of tile to the end wall, along the chalk line, then place another row of tile parallel to the first row.

5. Cut border or end tiles with a utility knife and straightedge. Mark tiles by placing a loose tile on top of the last whole tile in the row, and make sure the edges are aligned. Lay another tile on top of the two tiles as a cutting gauge. Butt the top tile toward the wall, then draw a line along the inner edge of the top tile, and cut it with a utility knife. Place all tiles until the floor is completed.

6. Check that tiles are firm and level on the floor. Wash the floor with soapy water to remove any debris. Replace the baseboards.

Tips Warnings

Order enough tile to allow for spoilage or bad cuts. Keep a few extra pieces on hand to replace damaged tiles as needed.

If your old floor was laid prior to 1986, it may contain asbestos. Do not sand the floor.
