Double Depression Holistic Remedies

Double depression occurs when dysthymia sufferers advance into major depression. Dysthymia is a mild, long-lasting depression that manifests itself as a negative, downward personality. Dysthymics often believe this is just how they are - that their negativity is an inborn trait.

When major or clinical depression hits a dysthymic, the results can be very dark, often leading to suicide. Whether holistic or allopathic, treatment is critical. While a number of psychopharmaceuticals have proven successful, many worry about the short and long-term affects of medication. It is important to consult a psychiatrist or physician when dealing with any form of depression.

Mind

One holistic approach to depression is clearing and healing the mind.

A traditional and widely accepted approach is psychotherapy, or talking therapy. Under guidance from a psychologist, psychiatrist or certified therapist, one may be able to get a better picture of one's self and begin to better address feelings, root causes and thoughts.

Hypnotherapy helps harness the power of the sub-conscious mind through hypnotic suggestions.

Sound therapy involves using headphones to listen to specially designed recordings, which trigger Delta and Theta brain waves. These waves are associated with trances and relaxation.

Journaling and art therapy are two other ways to express and record thoughts and emotions in the process of sorting and healing.

Body

St. John's Wort is a natural supplement shown to have anti-depressive benefits. It contains the chemical hyperforin, which in the right dose shows results similar to those of prescription anti-depressants. Typical dosage is 900 milligrams per day for moderate clinical depression and up to 1,200 milligrams per day for very severe depression. Studies also show that St. John's Wort can be even more effective when coupled with another natural supplement, 5-hydroxytryptophan, commonly called 5-HTP. A typical dosage of 5-HTP should be 25 to 100 milligrams.

Other treatments for the body include B vitamins, fish oil, yoga, significant exercise, martial arts, drumming therapy, light therapy, Ayurveda, acupressure, acupuncture and cleansing detoxifications.

Spirit

Some consider depression a spiritual crisis as well as a physical one. Addressing one's spiritual needs and beliefs may provide a better sense of being.

Prayer is a spiritual act that transcends specific religions, countries and cultures. Similarly, meditation is found not only to have a spiritual effect, but clinical studies show it has physical effects including increasing serotonin levels - which is key to coming out of depression.

Energy healing, pranic healing, tai-chi and trans-personal psychotherapy are other methods many use for addressing the spiritual aspect of healing and overcoming depression.
