A kitchen faucet breaking is a common problem that occurs in households or apartments every so often, and must be fixed almost immediately. There are specific things which should be done to take care of this situation, starting with troubleshooting the problem and making necessary repairs or replacements.
Shut Off Water
When the kitchen faucet stops working, something is obviously wrong and needs to be repaired. The first step is to shut off the water by screwing in the shut-off valves under the sink. This will allow you to take the actual faucet apart to identify the problem without water spraying everywhere. It will also allow you to take your time with the repair, break all the moving parts of the faucet apart and identify each of them and which ones may need to be fixed or replaced.
Identifying the Problem
Once the water is shut off and you can really figure out why the faucet is not working, see if it is something you can fix cheaply on your own. Is it a hose that is clogged with lime, or the faucet head has somehow become damaged or crimped? Are there leaky rubber rings on the faucet itself which is allowing water to leak? Most of the problems with faucets are small moving parts which can be bought at a hardware store for relatively little money. You just need to know take your faucet apart to fix it.
Call a Plumber
Once you have taken the faucet apart and tested the line, and the faucet is still not working or is leaking once you put it back together, you may have to call a plumber to come out and look at your faucets and sink. This may be the beginning or definitive sign of a larger problem with the plumbing system in your house or apartment, and a plumber should be there to nip it in the bud. The plumber may tell you that you need to replace the faucet or sink altogether, as well as pay him for his labor and time. This should be an option of last resort once you have tried to fix the faucet yourself.
