The Road King's clutch should be adjusted after the first 1,000 miles and then every 5,000 miles thereafter.
The Harley-Davidson Road Glide motorcycle is a touring-cruiser model with a wet clutch system supporting a five-speed transmission. This clutch should be adjusted after the first 1,000 miles and then every 5,000 miles thereafter. Also perform this adjustment anytime you replace clutch components. The procedure is a straight-forward affair and should take 45 minutes to an hour to perform, depending upon skill level. Perform it with the motorcycle in the upright and level position, if possible.
Instructions
1. Take out the fasteners surrounding the clutch inspection cover with an hex-head socket. Drop the cover and set it aside.
2. Slide the rubber boot around the clutch cable adjuster down the cable away from the adjustment hardware. Loosen the jam nut on the cable with an open-ended wrench. Turn the adjuster nut with an SAE open-ended wrench to add maximum free play in the clutch hand lever on the left handlebar.
3. Loosen the locknut on the clutch itself with an SAE socket. Turn in the clutch's push-rod adjusting screw with a hex wrench until all free play has been taken up and the clutch is lightly seated.
4. Back out the adjuster one-half to one turn and retighten the locknut. Squeeze the clutch lever three times to set the clutch's release mechanism.
5. Readjust the clutch cable adjuster nut to allow 1/16- to 1/8-inch free play in the clutch lever. Retighten the locknut.
6. Slip the rubber boot back over the adjuster nut hardware.
7. Reinstall the clutch inspection cover and secure it with its five fasteners.
