A Moen faucet uses a small cartridge to control and operate the water flow and temperature. If this part fails, or you need to replace the faucet, you must remove the cartridge. This project requires a minimum amount of skill and only basic tools. It is a fairly common repair and you should perform it whenever the faucet performance begins to lag or suffer.
Instructions
Removing the Faucet
1. Shut the water off by closing the valves on each of the hot and cold water pipes under the sink.
2. Remove the plug in the back of the handle and take out the screw with an Allen wrench. Slide the handle off by lifting it up and off the fixture. Remove the spout retaining nut by turning it to the left, and take out the cartridge by lifting it out of the faucet body.
3. Remove the faucet from the sink by unscrewing the connector washer under the base of the sink, which is attached to the base of the faucet. Use a pair of large pliers to remove this nut. Disconnect the two water pipes from the faucet hoses by unscrewing their connectors. Slide the faucet out of the sink by lifting it up and away from the base of the faucet.
4. Replace the faucet by inserting the new one into the sink hole. Tighten the washer nut under the sink to secure the faucet and connect the faucet hoses to the water pipes.
Replacing the Cartridge
5. Turn off the water to the faucet.
6. Remove the handle and spout retaining nut as you did in Step 2 above. Insert a new cartridge into the body of the faucet. You must use a replacement cartridge designed to fit your specific faucet.
7. Replace the retaining nut and tighten it with pliers to secure the cartridge. Replace the handle and tighten the mounting screw with the Allen wrench.
