A memory card allows you to store more pictures on your digital camera.
Most digital cameras have limited on-board memory, which means you can store only a small number of images on the camera. Using a memory card increases the available storage and allows you to take more pictures before running out of memory. Another advantage of using a memory card is that you can quickly swap out a card that is full for a fresh one and then continue shooting pictures. When you are finished, you can connect the memory card to a computer and quickly download the images from your camera.
Increased Memory
The most important reason to use a memory card is that it increases your camera's memory. The camera itself might have only a few megabytes of memory, but a memory card significantly increases that capacity. You can capture many more images before you have to stop, download the pictures to a computer and then erase them from the camera to free up space. A 2-gigabyte memory card can hold up to 45 minutes of video or up to 770 photos taken on a 10-megapixel camera.
Increased Speed
Every time you take a picture or video, your camera must search for memory space to store the image. The less memory available on the camera, the more time it takes the camera to locate that free space. This can extend the time it takes for your camera to reset between shots. A memory card increases the memory available to the camera, allowing the camera to storage images more quickly.
Increased Portability
Before the arrival of digital technology, a conventional camera stored its images on film. Each roll of film provided a certain number of frames, and once those frames were used, the film had to be removed and replaced with a new roll. Digital cameras have made it much easier to transfer images; you simply plug the camera into a computer with a USB cable. A memory card takes this convenience a step further. Because these cards are small, often measuring less than an inch square and a fraction of an inch thick, they can be easily removed from a camera and inserted into a compatible card slot on your computer, cellphone or even a digital printing station found at many retail stores.
Memory Card Sizes
Memory cards come in several sizes, in terms of both physical dimensions and the amount of memory they contain. The three sizes are standard, mini and micro. The standard is the largest of the three and the micro is the smallest. An inexpensive, low-capacity memory card can hold up to 2 GB of data; a high-capacity card can store from four to 32 GB of images. Extended capacity cards can hold up to two terabytes of data.
