How Do Picture Phones Work

Introduction

The capabilities on cellular phones have drastically changed since it inception in the 1970s. Cell phones are able to send and receive email, send text messages, play music and take photographs. Picture phones began in the early 2000s. During the beginning, cell phones could only take pictures and send them to individuals; now cell phones can take photos as well as capture video. The simple "point and click" system is used with every picture phone on the market. The "point and click" system is the simple idea of pointing the picture phone towards an object and taking a picture; all picture phones have this capability. Certain cell phones have applications that allows the user to create slide shows and other interesting projects with any picture taken. The Apple iPhone is a great example of having advanced features, when taking pictures. With the iPhone, you are able to crop the photo, zoom in and change the color (black and white, sepia) of the photo. The resolution of camera phones are significantly different to a standard digital camera. The size of the picture phone is an important factor when it pertains to the quality of the photograph. Due to the existing applications on the phone, the memory and quality of a picture will be considerably lower; as opposed to a digital camera that only is used for picture-taking. The resolution may be less, but the quality on many picture phones is that of a digital camera.

Sending Pictures Using Your Cell Phone

When taking a photograph with a picture phone, you have the ability to send that picture to another cell phone or to an email address. If you want to send the photo to an email, usually you will have to purchase a data plan from your cell phone carrier. When sending a photograph using a picture phone, you will first have to select the recipient of the picture. After the recipient is chosen, you are then able to send the picture. To retrieve a picture that was sent to you, usually there would be a message icon displayed on the top of the screen. You will then open the message, which will come as an MMS, or "multimedia messaging service." MMS is usually how images and videos are sent and retrieved. After you take a picture using your phone, you will be given various options that help you decide the fate of your photo. With a picture phone, you can send pictures instantly, crop the photo, change the color and zoom.

Digital Camera Quality

While picture phones are smaller and lacking the basics of a standard digital camera, the picture quality and display is exceptional. Based on the fate of the picture, a lower resolution can be used. For example, if you only plan on sending the photo to an email address or posting it online, a lower resolution should be used. Most picture phones are 3.5 mega pixels, as opposed to 5.0 mega pixels, which is the standard for digital cameras. However, there are some phones that have a smaller amount of mega pixels, such as 1.0. These picture phones are usually the less advanced models on the market. The more pixels the camera has, the better the quality of the picture.

Memory Capacity

The amount of memory these picture phones have is considerably less because of its size and the various applications already installed. Picture phones are generally used to take a quick photograph and instantly send online or to another phone. The amount of photos that can be saved on a cell phone depends on the size of the photo. It is possible to save a maximum of 50 photographs on a phone, but this may cause the cell phone to perform slower.
