Stop Humming On An Av Receiver

Using an audio/video receiver is an excellent way of maximizing your home entertainment experience. An AV receiver takes the audio from your TV by way of an audio connection cable and outputs it through stereo speakers, offering far superior audio quality than when just using the TV's speakers. You may at times experience intermittent audio distortion when using your AV receiver; this is typically a simple issue that can often be resolved using some simple troubleshooting.

Instructions

1. Check speaker wire connections on the back of the AV receivers. Speaker wire that has come loose, dirty, or damaged at all can very often cause humming or other audio distortion. Check the speaker cables for any of the above and replace them if they have become irreparably damaged.

2. Unplug the audio connection cables that attach the device you are trying to watch to the AV receiver and check them for any bending or damage. If you are using RCA cables to connect a DVD player to the AV receiver, for example, unplug the red and white audio cables and plug them back in snugly. Check the audio signal for any improvement.

3. Replace the audio connection cables that attach the device to the AV receiver if unplugging and replugging the cords did not clear up the humming. If there is no more humming with the new set of cables, simply continue to use those cables in place of the original set.

4. Scan the other inputs on the AV receiver to determine the scope of the problem. This is typically done using the input selection control--usually labeled "input," "source" or "input select"--either on the receiver itself or on the receiver's remote. Press it repeatedly and listen to the audio signal from all of the other devices that you have connected to the AV receiver. If there is only humming on one input and replacing the audio connection cables did nothing to clear it up, the device itself may be causing the issue and you will need to troubleshoot that device individually. If you hear the humming on all the inputs and replacing the speaker wire did not resolve the issue, the AV receiver will likely need to be serviced.
