Format A Multimedia Card

Multimedia cards (MMCs) are used for storing files on a variety of digital devices, including cameras, camcorders, voice recorders and cell phones. MMCs are popular because they are compact, and inserting the easy-to-use cards into devices is relatively straightforward. However, in some cases you'll need to format the card for your specific computer to ensure it will be compatible with your PC before you decide to use the card in a digital camera or other device.

Instructions

1. Insert the multimedia card into the SD card slot on your computer. According to Microsoft, "the secure digital (SD) electrical interface and protocol format are compatible with multimedia card (MMC) specification, including physical form factor." In other words, SD card slots can double as MMC card slots as long as your computer has the right embedded "host controller"---which Windows PCs do.

2. Click on the Windows "Start Menu."

3. Click on "Computer" in Vista or "My Computer" in XP.

4. Right-click on the MMC icon, located underneath the heading "Devices with Removable Storage," just below your primary hard drives. The card will usually be labeled with a brand name or model number, but you can expect to see "MMC" somewhere in the text next to the icon. Right-clicking will bring up a list of clickable options

5. Select "Format" or "Format Device" from the list of options available.

6. Confirm that you want to format the card for compatibility with your PC by clicking "Continue."

7. Wait while the multimedia card is formatted. This can take anywhere from several seconds to several minutes depending on the speed of your computer and the size of the MMC. A message will appear on screen letting you know when the card is finishing formatting.
