Connect Home Stereo Components

Stereo components connect with special cables attached to a central control unit, which is typically a receiver or amplifier. The cables are color-coded and the jacks for plugging them in should be clearly labeled, so making the connections only takes a few minutes when you follow these steps.

Instructions

1. Arrange the stereo components on shelves in a media storage cabinet or stack them, taking care to leave ventilation around the amplifier or receiver, which should be on top.

2. Plug a pair of white and red audio cables into a pair of left and right audio jacks on the back of the amp or receiver for each component you wish to connect. Most amps and receivers have the jacks clearly labeled for different components such as CD player, tape deck and turntable. Home theater components, such as a DVD player, will also have a (yellow) video cable that must be plugged into the receiver's video jack.

3. Connect the other ends of the cables to the stereo components in your system. The cables from the receiver's CD player jacks must be connected to the CD player, for example. This enables all of your components to work correctly when you select among them.

4. Strip 1/2 inch of insulation from the ends of a piece of speaker wire.

5. Connect the speaker wires to each speaker in your system by lifting the spring clips to reveal a hole underneath for the wire, or wrap each wire around a screw post if your speakers are equipped with posts.

6. Connect the other end of each speaker wire to the amp or receiver, making sure to connect the wire to the proper speaker connection. For example, make sure the wires from the front left speaker are connected to the posts labeled "front left speaker" on the back of the amp or receiver.

7. Plug the power cords for the stereo components into a surge protector power strip that can then be plugged into a wall outlet.
