Create Shallow Depth Of Field With Your Camera

With these instructions, you can turn this plain-looking picture into a stylized photo.

Depth of field is the term used to describe how far the focus range of the camera is before objects in the frame become out of focus. Deep depth of field has all, if not most, of the picture in focus, while shallow depth of field focuses on one object with everything else being blurry. A low-numbered F-stop, a high shutter speed and zooming all contribute to create this effect, which can be used to stylize your pictures.

Instructions

Creating Shallow Depth of Field

1. Switch your camera to manual mode.

2. Step as far away from your subject as you can, and zoom in as far as you can with your optical zoom. Do not enter digital-zoom range if your camera has it.

3. Adjust your F-stop to a low number. This will open up the lens and allow more light in, so your image might appear overexposed. Most cameras can go to at least F5 and some on the higher end can go to F1.8 or lower.

4. Adjust your shutter speed to a fast speed, such as 1/1000 or 1/5000. This will most likely correct your exposure level while at the same time making your depth of field shallow.

5. Focus on the object you want to photograph and take your picture. The background should be blurry while your object is in perfect focus.
