What Nikon Lenses Work On D80 Cameras

Nikon AF lenses work great on the D80.

The Nikon D80 is an advanced amateur camera. It combines a sensor that is essentially equivalent to the one included in the professional-level D200 with the ease of use of a consumer camera. It is light and easy to handle, while still being fully featured. One of its most important features is the inclusion of a screw-drive motor, which enables auto-focus functionality with all Nikon auto-focus lenses, whether or not they have internal AF-S motors.

AF-S & AF-I Lenses

As of 2010, Nikon's most-modern lenses, the AF-S and AF-I series, contain fast, quiet internal-focusing motors. All of these lenses will work on the D80, with all of their features fully supported, including VR (vibration reduction), when available.

Nikon AF & AF-D Lenses

The AF and AF-D lenses are Nikon's original auto-focus lenses. Because they lack their own motor, these lenses depend on a motor in the camera to focus. Also referred to as "screw drive" lenses, they can be used with the D80 and will have full function, although they will focus more slowly than AF-S lenses.

Nikon Manual Focus Lenses

Nikon has been making manual focus lenses in "F-mount" since the 1950s. Those that follow the AI or AI-S standard will mount and work on the D80. Unfortunately, though, since they lack internal electronics, the meter on the D80 will not function with them. As such, you will need to find a way to manually meter and focus with these lenses.

Other Nikon Lenses

Certain very old Nikon lenses will not mount on the D80. While pre-AI manual focus lenses will not mount at all, certain old manual-focus fish-eye lenses will mount, but the process of mounting them will damage your camera. These lenses will have a large protrusion at their rear and should never be used with the D80.

Third-Party Lenses

Many third-party lenses will work with the D80. Look for lenses from manufacturers such as Sigma, Tamron and Tokina that are either "Nikon mount" or "F-mount." Their ability to auto-focus or meter on the D80 will vary.
