Global positioning satellite (GPS) units offer peace of mind, enabling users to locate restaurants, gas stations and even keep track of children. In recent years, GPS units have become more affordable and are now carried by many retailers. If you're in the market for a GPS unit, some additional purchases to consider might be a home or vehicle charger, a protective carrying case or a GPS mount.
Charger
While most GPS units come with at least one charger, you might consider purchasing an additional one. This will come in handy if your charger is lost or damaged, or if you're purchasing a used GPS with only one type of charger. You can purchase a wall charger for indoor use, or a car charger. Some retailers carry package deals that include both. If you have several devices, pick up a universal charger that will work with multiple brands.
Case
A carrying case is an important accessory to consider, since it will house the unit when not in use. While most GPS units will come with some type of case, chances are it will not offer the type of protection you'll need. Often, manufacturers provide drawstring bags for safe-keeping. This option might be sufficient if you're planning to keep the unit in the center console or glove compartment of your vehicle. A leather case is a better option if you'll be transporting the unit in a bag from your home to your work, or while vacationing. If your GPS unit is used for hiking, camping or other rugged conditions, opt for a harder, more protective plastic case.
Mount
A GPS mount adds convenience and safety. Mounts typically include attachments that work for dashboard or windshield-mounting, which ensures visibility at eye-level. If properly mounted, the unit will remain safely in place regardless of bumpy roads and sharp turns. If your mode of transportation includes a motorcycle or bicycle, you'll want to purchase a handlebar mount. Most can be used with any cylinder-shaped frames, such as the types used on snowmobiles, golf carts and 4-wheelers.
