Replace A Light Switch Wall Outlet

Replace a Light Switch Wall Outlet

Light switches take a lot of abuse. Consequently they break down or their connections loosen, causing the light to operate inefficiently. While an electrician can cost up to $85 an hour just to show up, repairing this issue on your own will just cost a few dollars for a new switch. With the right tools this is a job any do-it-yourselfer should be able to tackle.

Instructions

1. Turn off the circuit breaker or fuse that controls power to the light switch you need to work on.

2. Unscrew the small screw in the center of the switch plate to access the interior of the light switch itself.

3. Locate two screws holding the switch assembly in place. There should be one above and one below the switch. Unscrew these and pull the switch assembly out of the wall about 2 inches.

4. Find the wires attached to the sides of the switch assembly with larger-headed screws. Draw a quick diagram of which wire goes to which screw so that you will be able to connect the new switch assembly.

5. Unscrew the wire connections about half way, just enough to remove the wires. Completely remove the old light switch assembly.

6. Connect the wall wires to the new light switch assembly following your diagram to be sure the correct wire goes to the correct connecting screw. Use some black electrical tape to cover the connections for an additional safety precaution.

7. Insert the assembly back into the wall. You may need to fold some of the wires to tuck it firmly back into place. Replace the switch plate.

8. Turn the power back on to the light switch and test.
