Be a Private Investigator in New York

Instructions
1. To be a private investigator in NY, you need to have at least 3 years of investigative experience. A person or firm seeking to be a PI should absolutely read the licensing rules from the NYS Department of State. These rules can be found here: http://www.dos.state.ny.us/lcns/pimain.htm
If you have no experience but would still like to be a PI. Contact some local companies. If you work under their license you can gain your qualifying experience.
2. Once you've determined if you have the experience, you can apply to take the private investigator exam. Exam topics include: license law; penal and criminal procedure law; investigative techniques; supervision; restrictions; interpreting written material; and report writing. Applicants will be allowed 2#189; hours to complete the test. The allotted time begins at the conclusion of the instructions.
3. After the exam, you will receive notice of pass or fail in the mail. Your successful notification must be sent in with your application, license fees, etc.
