If you are looking to set a tone or add a vibe to a room's ambient lighting, consider hanging a paper lantern or series of lanterns. Paper lanterns come in numerous colors, patterns and sizes. Most are ball shaped, with the bulb hanging down to illuminate the lantern. Change the color of the bulb to change the effect or use varying sizes of lanterns for visual impact. Paper lanterns work well in indoor spaces and are a snap to install.
Instructions
1. Determine the room that will gain the most benefit from the lantern. Options for the chosen room include creating a focal point for ambient light, working with a series of lanterns at different heights in a corner, or stringing several across a room for added dimension.
2. Calculate the distance from where you want the lantern to hang to the closest electrical socket. Take into account the distance end to end, to determine whether the primary cord is sufficient and if an extension will be necessary. This includes the full span of the wall, leading up and along the ceiling. Mark the spot on the ceiling where the lantern will hang.
3. Set up the expander or spiral wire frame of the lantern which will open up its shape. Carefully insert the bottom of the expander into the larger hole (top). Check that the grooves come into contact with the edges in the lantern. Next, hook the bottom grooves into place at the lantern's bottom. With care, pull the paper up to expand it to the top grooves of the expander. Set into position.
4. Make certain that the electrical cord is long enough. Plug the cord in the electrical socket and temporarily tack it into place against the baseboard, along the side of the wall, across the ceiling to the penciled mark.
5. Attach an extension cord if the primary cord runs short, taking into consideration the desired distance you wish the lantern to hang down. Once cord length is established, attach a ceiling hook into the previously marked spot on the ceiling. Place adhesive hooks evenly spaced along the wall to secure the cord. This prevents hazards such as tripping and snagging.
6. Remove the cord from the outlet before screwing in the light bulb. The bulb should not touch or come into direct contact with any part of the paper. Test the light to confirm all the connections are secure.
7. Replicate the steps above if hanging several lanterns in a room. Minimize the amount of cords going into one outlet by using a power strip set against the baseboard. Alternatively, consider purchasing battery-operated lights for the paper lanterns to minimize stringing cords across a room.
Tips Warnings
Compact fluorescent bulbs (CFCs) are generally recommended for use in paper lanterns.
If the lanterns become permanent fixtures, consider hiring a professional electrician to wire displayed lanterns through the wall or ceiling.
Be careful when handling paper lanterns as the paper can easily rip.
Follow manufacturer's kit instructions to avoid risk of fire.
