Get Rid Of Olive Oil Stains

Olive oil causes grease stains on absorbent fabrics.

Olive oil is a healthy oil to cook with and is an ingredient in many recipes. When olive oil spills on an absorbent surface, however, it can cause a grease stain. Olive oil stains are not difficult to remove, but you must remove them completely or they become dirt magnets on your surface. Common household supplies will remove olive oil stains from your clothing, carpet and upholstery. When cooking with olive oil, wear an apron to help you avoid olive oil spill or spatter stains on clothing.

Instructions

Clothing

1. Saturate the olive oil stain on your clothing with a laundry pre-wash stain remover. Rub the pre-wash solution into the olive oil stain on your garment, then allow it to sit for 15 minutes.

2. Flush the olive oil stain with cool water. Add a little more pre-wash stain remover to the olive oil stain and rub it into the fibers of the fabric.

3. Hot water is the most effective at removing grease stains.

Wash your clothing in the hottest water recommended on the garment's care label. Add 1 cup of white vinegar to the washing machine water. Vinegar is a natural grease cutter and cleaner and will help remove any last traces of olive oil in your clothing.

4. Check your clothing before placing it in the dryer to make sure the olive oil stain is completely removed. The heat from the dryer will set the stain.

Upholstery and Carpeting

5. Scrape any excess olive oil from upholstery or carpeting using a scraping tool.

6. Sprinkle cornstarch over the remaining olive oil stain, using enough to completely cover the olive oil stain. Allow the cornstarch to sit on the stain and absorb the olive oil for 15 minutes.

7. Vacuum excess cornstarch from fabric after it has absorbed the oil.

Remove the cornstarch from your upholstery or carpeting by using a vacuum.

8. Wet a cleaning cloth with dry-cleaning solvent. Use the solvent to sponge at the olive oil stain on your carpet or upholstery. Add more dry-cleaning solvent if needed and continue to sponge the stain.

9. Remove any remaining olive oil stains with a mixture of 1 tbsp. dish washing liquid, 1 tbsp. white vinegar and 2 cups of warm water. Alternate dabbing at the olive oil stain with a sponge and the soapy solution and rinsing it with plain water.

10. Dry your upholstery or carpet by placing a clean, dry cloth on the site of the stain and pressing the cloth into the carpet or upholstery to absorb liquid.
