Different rock shows call for different types of dress, but comfort is always key, as these festival-goers at Coachella show.
Not only do you get to see and hear your favorite bands play live, but rock shows are also occasions to get dressed up in some gear that you might not normally get to wear. But not all rock concerts have the same dress code. While no hard and fast rules exist, following a few guidelines will make your night -- or day -- rock even harder than you could imagine.
Rock the Arena
Keenya Hill's jeans, boots and leather jacket ensemble would work well at an arena rock show.
The most popular rock bands in the world play to large crowds in arenas. If you've got tickets to one of these events, then you have many wardrobe options. Because it is climate controlled inside an arena, both men and women can wear a jacket or blazer with a T-shirt and jeans without feeling too hot. Since there is seating, women can wear shoes or boots with heels without having to worry about their feet hurting from too much standing. But since part of the time will likely be spent standing, mid-level heels are the smartest, and they look cool.
Festival Time
This fan at Coachella knows that dressing cool and comfortable is the best way to dress at a music festival.
Over the past few years, music festivals like Coachella and Bonnaroo have become must-attend events for many young people across America. If you are attending a festival, keep a few things in mind. Since most festivals are held during the spring and summer, the temperatures are on the warmer side. So stick to lightweight cotton garments -- men and women can both wear tees and shorts in light shades or white. Ladies can also wear sundresses. Avoid dark colors which attract the sun and make you feel hotter. Bring a jean jacket or hoodie to wear when the temperature drops in the evening. You will, of course, be on your feet for hours, so wear comfortable flat shoes, like sandals or canvas sneakers.
Club Scene
Lydia Hearst's casual mini dress and boots combo: a suitable ensemble for a nightclub concert.
Up-and-coming bands who are not quite ready to rock an arena play at smaller venues like night clubs. Checking out your favorite rock acts in a club is fantastic since the space is smaller and more intimate and you won't be too far from the stage. You also get the chance to dress up a little more, especially if you plan to sit at the bar during or after the show. Women can be cool and wear frocks with some high heeled boots and a leather jacket. Men can sport dark denim jeans with a pair of derby shoes or loafers.
Theatrical Debut
For a theatrical rock show, a fancy dress and heels, like model Poppy Delevigne's, is perfectly appropriate.
Rock shows don't automatically mean live concerts. Plenty of theatrical productions with a rock music soundtrack are like concerts with a storyline to follow. These types of shows are performed in theaters and, therefore, call for a different style of dress than other rock shows. Getting glamorous is the way to go here, with a fancier dress or a nice pair of trousers and a well-fitting blazer for ladies. A woman can also bring out the highest footwear possible since she'll be sitting all night long. A neat sports jacket with tailored trousers and a button-front shirt is an equally appropriate way for a man to dress for a theatrical rock show.
