Become A Gunsmith In Kentucky

Gunsmiths have incredible knowledge of firearms.

A gunsmith performs a variety of duties including the maintenance, repair, modeling, troubleshooting, building and sale of firearms. Typically, most gunsmiths will specialize in one particular field of gunsmithing such as building and selling, or troubleshooting and repair. Gunsmiths must also be specially trained in either a classroom setting at a technical school or as an understudy or apprentice of a licensed gunsmith. Becoming a gunsmith in Kentucky is much the same as becoming a gunsmith in any other state. If you live in Kentucky and are an avid gun enthusiast, then becoming a gunsmith may be a dream job for you.

Instructions

1. Enroll in a technical or trade school in Kentucky that has courses in gunsmithing and machine shop techniques. These classes are typically part of a two-year Associate's degree program. Technical schools in Kentucky that offer these courses are Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond and Northern Kentucky University in Highland Heights.

2. Learn all you can about gunsmithing aside from your college training. Read literature and tutorials specific to gunsmithing such as by the authors Roy Dunlap, W.F. Vickery and Walter Howe. Download any tutorials about gunsmithing that may be on the web for you to study.

3. Apply for an apprenticeship or understudy position with a gunsmith in Kentucky. Gunsmiths can typically be found where guns are sold, and many gun shop owners are gunsmiths.

4. Obtain any licenses that you might need for gunsmithing. As of 2010, Kentucky state law does not require any special license for gunsmithing. Local township and municipal laws may have stipulations. If you wish to build or sell firearms, you must have a Federal Firearms License (FFL) in any state within the U.S. These license applications are available from your local Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) field office. The ATF website has listings and contact information for all 12 ATF field offices in Kentucky.

Tips Warnings

Prepare for a college curriculum that includes all facets of gunsmithing including metallurgy, ballistics, machine and hand tool operations. These courses will also involve mathematics such as algebra and geometry.

Always use caution when handling firearms.

Do not attempt to practice gunsmithing work on a firearm without proper training. You could easily hurt yourself or damage the firearm.
