Reduce The Photo File Size

No matter whether you call it a photo, picture, image or graphic, the file size of your photo can sometimes prevent you from emailing, uploading or adding it to a website. In a few steps, you can reduce the file size in a photo-image application, such as Microsoft Paint or Google's free Picasa application.

Instructions

Using Picasa

1. Download and install Picasa (picasa.google.com).

2. Open Picasa and select the photo you want to resize. Alternatively, double-click the photo to enter the Picasa Viewer.

3. From the "File" menu, select "Export Picture to Folder." The Export to Folder dialog appears. Note that exporting the picture doesn't alter the original image.

4. Click the "Browse" button to change the location where the file will be saved. Otherwise. Picasa will save the file in the default location (C:/My Pictures/Picasa/ ...).

5. Type "Reduced Size" or another significant name in the "Name of Exported Folder" field.

Under the Image Size section, select the "Resize to:" radio button. Then reduce the pixel size to 640 pixels by sliding the lever to the left. This image size is a good quality photo size to view on the Internet. Use at least 800 pixels if you plan to print the photo.

Choose the desired image quality for your photo using the "Image Quality" drop-down menu. You can choose "Automatic," "Normal," "Maximum," "Minimum" or "Custom."

Click the "Export" button when done. Your new photo file is smaller and now ready to email or upload.

Using Paint

6. Navigate to the "Start" menu and select "All Programs," "Accessories" and "Paint."

7. Click the "Paint" button (above the "Paste" icon) in the top left corner and select "Open" from the drop-down menu. Browse to the desired photo and click "Open." The photo appears in Paint.

8. From the "Home" tab, in the Image group, click "Resize." The Resize and Skew dialog appears.

9. Check the box next to "Maintain aspect ratio" to prevent the picture from being skewed upon reduction. From the Resize section, select the "Pixels" radio button. Then enter the number of pixels (such as "600") in the Horizontal field. The corresponding value in the Vertical field will automatically be calculated. Press "OK" when done.

10. Click the "Paint" icon and select "Save as" from the pop-up menu. Select the desired file format, such as "JPEG picture." From the left pane, navigate to the location where you want to save the image. In the File name field, type a significant name. Then click the "Save" button. Your image has been saved to a smaller size.
