is perhaps best known for its application with mobile telephone earpieces. GPS, or global positioning system technology, has also come into common use, often included as an option for automobiles. With a Bluetooth GPS, the two technologies are joined to make navigation easier than ever.
Bluetooth Technology
Bluetooth technology was originally developed by Ericsson but has since been adapted by a number of other companies. Bluetooth technology is powered by a radio chip that replaces cables and wires. With Bluetooth technology, devices such as mobile phone earpieces can establish and maintain a signal with the main device through radio signals, rather than being conducted through a cable or wire.
GPS Technology
GPS technology allows users to determine their position with a high degree of accuracy. GPS technology is commonly used as part of a directional system in automobiles that allows drivers to find their way even in unfamiliar locations. GPS technology is also available in handheld devices.
Using Bluetooth GPS with a PDA
A PDA, or personal digital assistant, can be easily adapted to be used with Bluetooth GPS technology. Many PDAs already have Bluetooth capability, which means that no adapters are needed to use the PDA with the GPS unit. With Bluetooth technology, the GPS device can be placed in a location with a clear path to open space, while the PDA can be placed where the user can easily read the screen.
Considerations
GPS devices rely on mapping data to make them functional. Mapping software is very memory intensive, so a memory card with a large capacity is ideal. Also, battery life is an important consideration when considering GPS devices and PDAs.
Disadvantages
For a PDA without Bluetooth capabilities, an expansion slot will be necessary to add a Bluetooth adapter. This will mean one less expansion slot for a memory card containing mapping software. Bluetooth GPS devices can also be expensive, with one well-reviewed unit priced at approximately $200 in June 2009.
