Replace the Screen on a Big Screen TV
Replacing a screen on any type of television is quite difficult. If your television is an LCD or Plasma, then you are better off purchasing a new model, as the price of parts and repair will exceed this cost. With projection big screen televisions, it is possible to order a new screen, but the actual replacement is a very precise procedure. If you feel you are steady and qualified enough to attempt it, the premise of the steps themselves are not that complicated.
Instructions
1. Locate the the model number on your television, and contact the distributor to order a new screen for your model. The price could range anywhere from $300 to $500, so be prepared. You can check online to see if there are any outlets that may carry your specific model for less, but the prices are all generally very steep.
2. Once you have the screen on hand, unplug power to the television to prepare for replacement. Put on protective gloves. It is important to note that, even though the set is unplugged, it may still carry a dangerous charge inside. Be extremely careful as you proceed.
3. Unscrew the exterior of the set. Depending on what type of model you have, there may be screws on the back end, or you may be able to access the screen directly from the front. Once you have access to the interior of the television, you can safely pop the screen out. Take note of which side of the screen was facing outward. There may be additional screws holding the screen in place that require a smaller screwdriver. Be careful not to touch the mirror or lenses around the back end. Any dust that collects will cause serious static in your projected picture.
4. Replace the new screen, being sure that the correct side is facing outward. Carefully reassemble the exterior of the television. If you touched or soiled any of the delicate areas inside, use a soft handkerchief and eyeglass cleaner to wipe it off before proceeding.
