Travelers use Citizen Band (CB) radios in place of cell phones on road trips and for instant communication. A big plus is that you don't have to worry about getting a signal to your cell phone. So if you want to join the growing trend, follow these guidelines to install a CB radio in your vehicle.
Instructions
1. Purchase your CB radio with or without an antenna, mount and cables. Gather all the necessary tools for installation.
2. Select accessible locations for your CB radio, the speaker and microphone. Secure the bracket and microphone in their chosen places.
3. Locate the power and aerial connections on the back of your CB radio. The power connection is a socket connection and a wire and plug or a positive and negative wire. The aerial connection is a plug with a small hole in the center.
4. Take the red (positive) wire from your vehicle's battery and join it to the radio wire. Run the black wire from the negative radio connection to the ground. Look for a metal surface attached to the body of your car for grounding.
5. Measure off 18 feet of 50 ohm (unit of electrical resistance) coaxial cable and run it from your radio to the antenna. (See the related eHow article titled "Install a CB Radio Antenna.") Excess cable should be folded and stored out of the way. Never coil the excess cable.
6. Power up your CB radio to test the installation but don't broadcast until your antenna has been tuned.
