Record Your Voice Onto A Hard Drive

Record Your Voice Onto a Hard Drive

There are many advantages to recording your voice onto a hard drive. It is a convenient way to keep audio-based notes and a record of important information. It's also a very simple process, especially if you use the free Audacity program, which will work with both PCs and Macs.

Instructions

1. Download and install Audacity (see Resources). This is a free audio-recording program, and will allow you to record your voice for an unlimited amount of time and in very good quality.

2. Record your voice. Simply press the red "Record" button in Audacity to begin, then speak into your computer's microphone. Your voice will register on Audacity's visualizer. Note: If the visualizer does not move, there may be something wrong with your microphone, and you may want to check your connection.

3. Export your voice file. Go to the "File" menu in Audacity, then choose the format in which you want to export your file. A new window will pop up. Note: if you want to save your file as an MP3 (as opposed to a WAV or OGG), you will need the Lame encoder. (See Resources for more.)

4. Browse for your hard drive. Simply select the hard drive you want to use from the drop-down window, and then select the file/directory to which you want to save your voice files. Then click "OK" to finish the process. Exporting the file may take a few minutes.
