Phones That Use Sim Cards

Many modern cell phones require a SIM card (Subscriber Identify Module) to access cell phone service. SIM card phones work on Global System for Mobile Communication (GSM) networks, whereas phones that don't need SIM cards work on the competing network, Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA). The SIM card system is somewhat convenient, because you can easily save information to the card and take it with you to another phone. But at the same time, the risk of losing your SIM card (along with your valued information) is high.

One Big Downside

The major downside of phones that use SIM cards is that they are easily stolen and resold. All that the thief has to do is get a new SIM card and pay a few dollars to get an unlock code to use or resell the SIM phone. Alternatively, some CDMA phones (phones from Verizon use this technology) are automatically locked from ever being used again when stolen.

Cell Phone Providers

Cingular and T-Mobile are two of the most popular United States providers that use GSM technology and offer SIM card phones for customers.
