Fluorescent light bulbs are becoming more popular because they use less energy and last longer than incandescent bulbs. However, the negative effects of fluorescent bulbs must be understood before making the choice to switch from one light source to another.
Mercury
Fluorescent lights contain mercury, meaning it is extremely dangerous if one breaks. Exposure to mercury can cause something as small as a headache to something more serious, such as kidney problems.
Radiation
Sitting under a fluorescent light exposes the body to microwave radiation. It can be harmful to the body in large doses, leading to skin cancer, autism and leukemia.
Behavior
Fluorescent lighting can have a negative effect on behavior. In schools, children are less likely to perform well and behave properly when under fluorescent rather than full-spectrum light.
Electromagnetic Fields
Fluorescent lights emit electromagnetic fields (EMFs) more than incandescent bulbs. Exposure to EMFs is dangerous, as they are known to cause serious conditions, including brain tumors, birth defects, cataracts, heart problems, nausea, chest pain and more.
Other Negative Effects
Other negative effects of fluorescent lights are dyslexia, reading problems, migraines, fatigue, anxiety, ADD and dizziness.
