Transferring digital images directly onto an external storage medium is simple.
With digital cameras having become the standard, film has become a relatively obsolete storage medium. Although most digital cameras store pictures on removable memory cards, you might want to have an additional backup in the event that your memory card should get destroyed or deleted. Whether you prefer to back to them up on a CD, DVD or external hard drive, you can transfer images from your digital camera directly onto one of these external storage media.
Instructions
1. Connect your digital camera to your computer using the USB cable that came with it. Although you will not transfer the pictures onto your computer in any way, your computer's USB interface will allow you to quickly transfer files onto another storage medium also connected to your computer. Alternatively, you can insert your camera's memory card into your computer's memory card reader, if it has one.
2. Attach an external hard drive to your computer's other USB port or, if you plan to burn to the images onto a CD or DVD, insert a disc into your computer's optical drive. In either case, wait for your computer to recognize the medium you've attached or inserted.
3. Transfer your images directly from your computer or memory card to your external storage medium. Double-click the name of your camera or memory card in "My Computer" (or, if you use a Mac, in the "Finder") and hold down the "Ctrl" (Mac users: "Command") and key while clicking on images to select them.
4. Drag the photos onto the image of your external hard drive. If you plan to burn them onto a CD or DVD, create a new folder anywhere on your computer by right-clicking (Mac users: hold "Ctrl" and click) and selecting "Folder" from the "New" menu. Drag them into a folder, then right-click on the folder and select "CD (or DVD) Drive" from the "Send To:" menu. Wait for your images to be transferred or burned.
