Properly Ground A Car Stereo Amplifier

To ensure stable operation of your vehicle's aftermarket amplifier, securing the ground wire to a stable nut or bolt on the body of the car is important. Grounding the amplifier completes the circuit, giving your amplifier power. While the power wire connects to the positive lead of the car battery, the ground wire acts as the negative lead, attaching to a metal object in your car.

Instructions

1. Disconnect the negative terminal of your car battery for safety reasons and to prevent short circuits.

2. Decide where you'll place the amplifier. This step is important because the ground must be placed within 18 inches of the car amplifier. Mount the amplifier in a cool, well-ventilated area such as the trunk in order to prevent overheating.

3. Connect the ground wire to the amplifier's ground output. Check your amplifier's wiring diagram in order to determine which output the ground wire connects to. Usually it's labeled on the amplifier.

4. Locate a nut or screw within 18 inches of the amplifier. The ground wire must be mounted to the body of the vehicle and metal nuts or screws are perfect places to ground the amplifier.

5. Unscrew the nut or screw and place the metal lead of the ground wire where the nut or screw bolts into. Bolt the nut or screw back over the ground wire to secure it in place.
