What Is Infrared Light?


Infrared light is one of the most commonly discussed forms of light within the spectrum. At the most basic, infrared light is referred to as heat; it is a type of radiation, the wavelengths of which can't be seen by human eyes, but which is felt as heat. Infrared light is seen through the use of special cameras, and this particular wavelength of light is useful in many ways.


Features


Infrared light lies between visible light and microwaves on the electromagnetic spectrum. It has different lengths, which range from what is sometimes called "near infrared," which is closest to visible light and "far infrared," which is closer to microwaves. Instead of seeing infrared light, as we see visible light, infrared light is sensed in the form of heat. The far infrared wavelengths are what we feel; near infrared wavelengths are too small to be picked up by the nerve receptors of our skin.


Function


The function of infrared light depends on the situation. Most remote controls use infrared signals to operate televisions, and things like infrared cameras are useful in conducting science experiments or checking to see if equipment is overheating. In certain situations, special types of infrared cameras assist police in pursuing fleeing suspects.


Effects


The effects of infrared radiation can be extremely useful. People use it whenever they heat their homes, cook food or operate any machinery that gives off heat. However, infrared radiation can be dangerous if not monitored properly; in too high of a concentration it can cause burns and result in fire.


Benefits


Infrared light is useful in many ways. Without the infrared radiation that comes to Earth from the sun, Earth would not be able to support life as we know it. Heat also has many other uses; heat lamps utilize infrared radiation to keep food warm and infrared cameras can be used in situations in which the source or use of heat needs to be determined.


Infrared Cameras


Infrared cameras use thermal imaging to allow users to see heat sources and the effects of that heat. Using a night vision camera is a form of thermal imaging, allowing soldiers, rescue workers and others to see in situations in which visible light is not present or negligible. Infrared cameras use special filters that capture the infrared images present. Thermal imaging is primarily used in military and research projects, although the technology is much more widely available now.
