Calculate Pixel Size

Thousands of pixels combine to make up a larger image

A pixel is an individual point of color on a monitor. Imagine a computer monitor as thousands of tiny dots of color--when viewed from a distance, the dots merge to form a larger overall image; however, when magnified, individual points of color are visible--and are known as pixels. Calculating the size of a pixel on a computer screen requires input of the resolution as well as a diagonal measurement of the screen.

Instructions

Finding Screen Resolution Online

1. Open a new web browser window.

2. Go to the "What Is My Screen Resolution" website (see Resources.)

3. Make a note of the figure under the "You Are Using" text.

Measuring Diagonal Size

4. Extend the tape measure diagonally across the screen from corner to corner.

5. Measure the distance between each corner.

6. Make a note of the measurement in inches alongside the screen resolution measurement.
