Hook An Amp To Car Battery

While many people are concerned with connect their amplifier to speakers and what ohms a specific amplifier can handle, installing the amplifier also requires connecting power from the battery. You need to make sure that you have a secure power supply or you will never receive the best performance from your amplifier. Even more than that, if you don't properly connect your amplifier you are creating a safety hazard. Any time you are dealing with electric current it is important to work carefully and to install correctly.

Instructions

1. Disconnect your car battery. Disconnect the negative terminal first to prevent surges and sparks.

2. Find a hole in the heat shield of your car. If you cannot find a pre-drilled hole that works for you, use a metal bit and drill a hole just large enough for your power wire to fit through.

3. Feed one end of your power wire through the hole in the heat shield. Place the heat shielding plastic coiling over the power wire under the hood.

4. Unscrew door trim inside the car. Feed the power wire under the carpet to the paneling on the side of the car. Route the wire under the paneling and guide it along under the door trim, continuing to feed it back until it reaches the back seat.

5. Feed the power wire under the back seat and into the trunk. You may need to lift up the back seat to find an opening from the inside of the car to the trunk.

6. Cut the power wire approximately 6 inches from the battery under the hood. Strip the plastic casing from the ends you just cut. Connect the fuse box by inserting the wire ends into the connectors on the box. Tighten the connections using a screwdriver or hex tool depending on the particular fuse box.

7. Strip the plastic casing from the end of the power wire at the battery. Connect a ring terminal to the end of the wire. Solder the connection after crimping for the most secure result.

8. Open the trunk. Strip the casing from both ends of your ground wire. Also strip the casing from the end of the power wire.

9. Pull up a corner of the carpet in the trunk. Solder one end of the ground wire to the trunk frame. Connect the other end to the ground terminal on the amplifier.

10. Connect the end of the power wire to the battery terminal on the amplifier.

11. Make sure the fuse is removed from the fuse box. Connect the ring terminal to the battery terminal. Unscrew the terminal nut and slip the ring over the bolt. Tighten the nut.

12. Reconnect the battery. Connect the positive connection first.

13. Insert the fuse into the fuse box. Tighten the door trim and shut the hood.
