Disassemble A Speedlite

Canon Speedlite camera flash units provide high-powered lighting for professional and amateur photographs. The unit is detachable, making do-it-yourself repairs more simple than fixing flashes that are contained within the camera. Disassembling your Speedlite flash unit is fairly simple. However, if you take the unit apart, you run the risk of injury from the flash's capacitor and you may void any warranty Canon provides for the flash.

Instructions

1. Open the battery compartment and remove the batteries. Let the flash unit sit undisturbed for 10 minutes to ensure the electrical charge dissipates from the capacitor. Failing to do this can result in serious electrical shock.

2. Remove the two screws securing the bottom of the flash unit and pull the bottom section of the case off the flash.

3. Pry off the rubber disk on the side of the hinge with a flathead screwdriver. Remove the four Phillips-head screws underneath.

4. Pry the rubber ring from around the hinge lock button with a flathead screwdriver. Remove the four Phillips-head screws underneath.

5. Pull the two parts of the Speedlite casing apart carefully to completely disassemble the flash unit.
