Initialize A Photo Card

Initialize photo cards in a digital camera, not a computer.

After inserting batteries into a digital camera, take a few minutes to initialize your camera's photo card before taking your first few pictures. This process, also known as formatting, makes media cards read and transfer data seamlessly between your model of camera and the card. Whether your camera uses compact flash, SD, SDHC, SDXC, multi-media cards or XD, initializing the card reduces your chances for camera error messages and the corruption of data files on the photo card.

Instructions

1. Turn off the digital camera. Insert the photo card into the corresponding slot on the bottom or side of the camera. Close the media compartment door.

2. Turn on the power to the camera. Set the camera to "Playback mode". Look for a small triangle icon that resembles a play button on a CD player or DVD player.

3. Press the "Menu" button. Toggle through the menu items until you locate a "Tools" menu. Scroll through the options until you see the "Format" function.

4. Press the "Set" or "OK" button to choose "Format". Read the confirmation message that asks if you want to perform this function. Choose "Yes" by pressing "Set" or "OK".

5. Read additional prompts. Choose the option for "Low Level Formatting" to create new directories and files on the photo card. This ensures smooth operations when shooting video clips or continuous still frames.

6. Turn the camera from "Playback" mode to "Recording" or "Auto" mode to start taking pictures.
