How Well Do Led Flashes Work On Small Cameras

LEDs work very well in small cameras, such as phone cameras.

Light emitting diodes (LEDs) can be used in a variety of applications. They are used in reading lamps, headlights for cars, household lighting and as flash lighting for cameras.

History

LEDs were invented in the early 1900s. It wasn't until the 1960s that they began to have practical value. They first appeared in only red light and were used as warning lights. By 1990, you could get a wide selection of colors and intensities in LEDs.

Function

You find that, unlike incandescent flash bulbs, LEDs use very little electricity, and and most of this electric energy is used to produce light rather than heat. Since they are a semiconductor, the amount of light you get is directly related to the forward current through the LED.

Cameras

Your LED is not as powerful as some other types of flash, however there is sufficient light for a smaller camera, such as a phone camera. The LED system should be designed to cover only the area your camera covers so as not to waste light and energy. Another huge advantage is that LEDs have a very short rise time (10 nanoseconds to 100 nanoseconds to be ready to go between flashes). You can strobe with your camera very quickly in comparison to other light sources, such as the xenon tube flash.
