How Get A Stronger Signal On My Xm Radio

Satellite radio can be optimized for best performance.

Like most antennas, XM Radio antennas work best when they are as high as as clear from from obstruction as possible. In addition, satellite radio antennas are relatively unique, in that they use the mounting surface as part of the parabolic to pull in the signal. Whether in the home or in a mobile environment, there are a few tried-and-true methods available to maximize XM reception.

Instructions

In the Car

1. Remove XM antenna from trunk lid, if so mounted. Carefully slide micro-coax cable attaching the antenna from under the weather stripping most likely used to route the cable.

2. Clean the area on the vehicle's roof, approximately 6-8 inches from rear window, using isopropyl alcohol pad.

3. Reattach magnetic antenna to cleaned area on roof. Use vehicle's weather stripping to conceal micro-coax cable leading to antenna.

In the House

4. Remove XM antenna from existing location. Try to place the antenna on a windowsill or near a building entry point, routing micro-coax as needed.

5. Place new XM antenna/roof mount combo on the structure's roof if window placement proves unsatisfactory. Assemble the XM Radio's roof mount, using appropriate screwdrivers (if needed).

6. Extend ladder to the needed height to reach the highest safe point on the structure's roof. Recruit a helper to steady the ladder.

7. Place the antenna in its final mounting location. Use drill and 3/4-inch bit to pre-drill mounting holes.

8. Secure the antenna using drill, wood screws and Phillips bit inserts. Aim the antenna straight up, using the adjustable mount arms.

9. Screw on coaxial-to-XM adapter (supplied) to coax cable. Route RG-6 coaxial cable to XM receiver from roof antenna. Test for signal strength at receiver.
