Make A Simple Camera With Kids

Supervision and guidance are key to creating a successful camera with kids.

You can make a simple camera with kids using a few items you may already have around the house. Pinhole cameras are fun and functional crafts that can be made by kids in just a few minutes with a little help from an adult. Making a basic pinhole camera teaches children lessons about the science of light and photography. Guide kids to make a simple camera to encourage creativity and inspire interaction with the world around them.

Instructions

1. Measure 2 inches up from the bottom of the chip can and make a mark with a permanent marker. Spin the can a quarter turn before making three more marks at the same distance from the base. Connect the four marks with the marker to draw a thin ring around the chip can.

2. Cut the chip can along the marker line using a utility knife. This must be done carefully and by an adult to avoid injury.

3. Wipe down all the interior surfaces of the short base portion and lid with a paper towel. Discard the long top section. Tiny chip particles cast shadows and affect the quality of the pinhole pictures.

4. Spin the point of a thumbtack while applying medium pressure until it pushes through the center of the metal base on the chip can. Cover the new hole from the outside with a 2-inch piece of electrical tape.

5. Go into a darkroom and trim a single frame of 120 size film and affix it to the inside of the lid with clear tape around its edges. Press the lid onto the cut end of the shortened chip can. Cover all but the metal base in two layers of heavy-duty aluminum foil before leaving the darkroom.
