Protect A Lens

A damaged lens reduces image quality and resale value.

Protecting lenses should be a priority for all photographers. The front and rear glass of a lens are sensitive to dust, scratches, chips, fungus and many other hazards. Developing good lens-safety habits is the best method to protect your lenses from damage. Because replacing a quality lens can be very expensive, using accessories and appropriate storage techniques will help prevent damage to your lenses.

Instructions

1. Keep the lens cap on the lens at all times when you are not using it.

2. Place the body cap on the lens immediately when removing it from the camera.

3. Keep a UV filter on the lens. This extra glass element won't affect your images and will protect your lens from dust and accept most of the blow if damage occurs. They cost around $10.

4. Use a lens wrap or lens case when transporting lenses. A lens wrap is a simple envelope of fabric that will protect the lens from direct abrasions.

5. Keep the lens secure when traveling to minimize jostling.

6. Store the lens in a room-temperature location, with both caps attached.

7. Purchase lens insurance if your lens is extremely valuable and you have an active schedule. Insurance will cover you in case something irreparable does happen.
