Lensbaby Tutorial

A Lensbaby attachment.

Lensbaby camera lenses allow photographers to toy with the focal point of a photo by using a bellows in conjunction with a simple lens. Lensbaby attaches to your camera the same way as any other interchangeable lens. It enables you to move the focal point anywhere in the frame, creating a sharp focus while allowing the peripheries to blur.

Becoming Familiar With the Lens

Look through the viewfinder while making adjustments to Lensbaby. The bellows is adjustable and can be tilted in any direction for focal effects. You can also adjust the light coming into your camera by squeezing the bellows of the Lensbaby. This will obstruct the light traveling through the bellows to your camera lens and blur your picture in the direction the Lensbaby bellows has narrowed. Playing with these options will help you get a sense of how you can use Lensbaby to create special effects.

Adjusting Camera Settings

Switch to aperture priority mode. You should also adjust exposure times. Overcompensate on exposure times, since your camera may not be able to meter correctly--your camera may be "shooting blind", unable to accurately process the light available for the picture. It may take a few minutes for you to set your camera up for optimal shooting, making this method of photography ideal for still shots.

Finding the Right Shots

Lensbabies are great for emphasizing dramatic moments, or if you want to help draw the viewer's eye to the sweet spot. Lensbabies are commonly used in romantic scenes, which play upon narrowed vision of lovers by obscuring the periphery. Your Lensbaby can also help you draw out an otherwise obscure aspect of a photo. Many photographers like the Lensbaby because its blurring effects can easily evoke the clarity and contrast of human eye vision.
