The Kenwood TK-290 is a portable transceiver. Transceivers are used to make and receive radio transmissions, and they operate on a variety of frequencies and channels. The TK-290, which operates on the VHF frequency and is normally used for public services, such as the police force, can be programmed to place an emergency call at the touch of a button. It has a choice of 160 channels and is also suitable for general use. The operations vary depending on how the unit has been programmed.
Instructions
1. Switch the TK-290 on by turning the "Power Switch/Volume Control" knob clockwise. This is on the top of the unit, the farther left of the two dials.
2. Choose a group to make or receive transmissions in. This is done differently depending on how your dealer programmed the TK-290 for you. It would typically by done either by using the two buttons on top of the unit (to the bottom right of the display screen) or using the two buttons on the left hand side, underneath the rectangular "PTT" switch. This function can also be programmed to the selector knob (the other dial on top of the TK-290) or the toggle switch, located above the buttons on top of the unit. Press the relevant buttons to select a group.
3. Select a channel to transmit in. The selector knob is most suited to this function, but again, based on how the unit was programmed, this could also be done with the top and side buttons mentioned earlier.
4. Press the monitor button to see if your selected channel is busy. This again could vary based on programming, but the function would most likely be assigned to the circular button above the "PTT" (push-to-talk) button on the left side of the unit. The orange button, which would most likely be the monitor button, is the highest of the three buttons on the left side. The monitor light will illuminate on the display. If the channel is busy, choose another channel or wait for it to become free.
5. Press and hold the "PTT" button to transmit a message in the desired channel. This is a rectangular button on the left side of the unit. Speak into the TK-290's microphone, which is inside the speaker on the front of the unit.
6. Release the "PTT" button to receive messages. This works like a common walkie-talkie.
