Memory cards for digital cameras act in the same way that hard disk drives do, in that when files are deleted, they are not immediately removed. Instead, that space becomes available to be written over. So if you have deleted or formatted your memory card and want to recover old photographs, you can do so with memory card recovery software. There are many applications of this variety available on the Internet that will do essentially the same job. Memory card recovery is a long process, even with a top-of-the-range personal computer, so you may want to set up the process and leave it for a few hours.
