Protect A Digital Slr Camera In The Cold

Protect your digital SLR.

When you use any kind of camera--including a digital SLR--in the snow and cold, it is more likely to be damaged due to the elements. Condensation can infiltrate the digital camera and wreak havoc on the electronics of the device. Because of this, you need to take a few extra precautions to ensure your camera stays in tip-top shape, even after a day in the cold.

Instructions

1. Wrap a plastic bag around your digital camera, including the lens. You can cut a few holes into the bag to make sure you can see through the viewfinder and keep the lens open (wrapping a rubber band around the lens to hold down the bag may prove helpful). The bag acts as a shield to condensation, preventing moisture from reaching the digital camera.

2. Replace the batteries. The cold weather drains the batteries faster, so you will need multiple battery replacements on a long shoot outside.

3. Avoid using the camera right after you step inside a warm area. This sudden change of temperature causes many of the electronics inside the camera to expand in size, causing images to become corrupt.

4. Remove the memory cards and batteries from the SLR camera once inside. This prevents moisture from damaging the key parts of your camera.

5. Keep the digital SLR in a camera bag when you are not using it. This protects it from most of the elements of a cold day.
