The Kodak Brownie was one of the first snapshot cameras created. Kodak made using their film a requirement by changing the size of the film spools that the camera used. This made it impossible for the average person to use the readily available 120 film instead of Kodak's version. You can use 120 film in the Kodak Brownie, providing you have a room that can be made absolutely dark. You will also need an empty Kodak Brownie film spool that you can get from a used camera store or out of a broken Kodak Brownie.
Instructions
1. Go into a bathroom or other room that will be absolutely dark when the lights are turned off. Close the door to the room. Stand in front of a table or work surface. Place the Kodak Brownie film spool in front of you on the table or work surface.
2. Open the Kodak Brownie camera. Take out the empty Kodak Brownie film spool from the new film position that is at the top of the camera. Place the empty Kodak Brownie film spool into the film winding position that is at the bottom of the camera. Place the Kodak Brownie camera on the table or work surface at the left side of the Kodak Brownie film spool.
3. Place the 120 film spool on the table or work surface to the right of the Kodak Brownie film spool.
4. Turn out the lights. Pick up the 120 film spool in your left hand. Tear off the paper seal using the fingernails of your right hand.
5. Unroll the film from the 120 film spool with your right hand, forming a loose roll as you unwind it. Continue unwinding the film until you feel the small paper tab at the end. Put the 120 film spool aside.
6. Pick up the Kodak Brownie film spool with your left hand. Insert the small paper tab through the wide slot in the Kodak Brownie film spool. Slowly wind the film onto the Kodak Brownie film spool, keeping the edges lined up as you wind.
7. Stop winding when you feel the tapered film end of the film. Carefully pull up on the tape that is on the tapered film end so that it is out of the way. Continue winding the film until the tapered end has been wound up. Reattach the tape.
8. Continue winding the film until you reach the end. Turn on the lights.
9. Place the film on the Kodak Brownie film spool into the new film position inside of the Kodak Brownie. Unwind the film over to the other Kodak Brownie film spool. Insert the end of the film into the slot in the Kodak Brownie film spool. Close the Kodak Brownie camera. Turn the film advance knob to wind the film to the first frame. You are now ready to take pictures.
