The LCD display monitor on computers is much like those on HDTV sets. So you should be able to watch HDTV on it. There are peripherals with software you can install on your computer to set up the equivalent of an HD TV on it. If all you want to see are your local channels, you need an adapter that is much like an HD converter to hook up to the computer. If you want to hook up your cable or satellite box, you need something that will transmit the signal through some form of coaxial to USB connection.
Instructions
1. Purchase a USB stick that will transmit the HDTV signal to your computer. There are a few different types available from online vendors (see link in Resources). Some have a coaxial port to connect to your HD cable or satellite receiver. Others are antenna-based to receive only your local HDTV signals.
2. Plug the stick into your computer's USB port and install its software on your computer. If the stick didn't come with a software program on a CD, click on the drive icon that should appear on your computer desktop. Follow the program's instructions for installing the software.
3. Open the software program and use the remote control that comes with the stick to turn the computer into an HDTV and browse through all channels the tuner can pick up.
4. Check out any other options that are installed on the tuner stick. It will often let you pause and resume live TV broadcasts like Tivo does. You could also record shows onto the stick and immediately play them back with rewind and pause features, or you can transfer the saved files to the computer hard drive or a DVD. It may include instant uploads to video sharing websites like YouTube.
