Nikon Coolpix S550 Specs

Nikon's Coolpix cameras have features that make you look professional.

Nikon's Coolpix digital cameras have become quite popular in recent years due to their affordability and easy of use. Out of myriad models available, the S550 is one affordable model in 2010 that has many of the most classic Coolpix features. As with all Coolpix cameras, the S550 is also extremely portable and able to fit right into your shirt pocket or a purse. Additionally, they come in multiple colors.

Resolution Level

While some Coolpix cameras go up to 12 megapixels, the S550 is only 10. However, Nikon's own site for the camera reminds you that 10 megapixels still gives you stunning pictures. With that resolution level, the camera enables you to make prints as large as 16 by 20 inches in size. And when you see your pictures, the detail level will be noticeable if you still use old film cameras.

EXPEED Image Processor

The technology behind the high resolution level is Nikon's specialized EXPEED image processor. Nikon uses much of the same imaging technology they've developed for decades with their film cameras to ensure excellent picture optimization. They tout the EXPEED image processor taking digital pictures that look natural, even during spur-of-the-moment shots.

Lens

For this Coolpix version, Nikon has a 5x optical zoom with a Nikkor glass lens. Nikkor is a company known for its exceptional optics. But Nikon touts their own history of top-notch optics that goes back to their old film cameras. This lens will help you get sharp results with vivid colors.

Image Stabilization

One of the handiest features on this camera and all of Nikon's Coolpix cameras is electronic VR image stabilization. Through this feature, motion blur is taken care of with the push of a button. This works well at sporting events or at get-togethers where people are moving all the time. It also works well in low light conditions or in situations where you can't keep the camera steady.

Scene Modes

Another good feature available on this camera and all Coolpix cameras is the scene mode setting. With this feature, you can set the camera so that it sets all lighting, aperture and flash settings automatically for you based on the photographic situation. Some of the simplest scene modes available are Portrait, Landscape, Night Landscape and Museum settings.

High-Quality Movies

Along with taking excellent digital pictures, the S550 and all other Coolpix cameras also have the ability to take high-quality video. Nikon says the movies are "TV quality," even though that's a euphemism for not 1080p. Nevertheless, the amount of home movies you can make on the camera depends on the size of your memory card. Use of a high-quality memory card can mean hours of video time. The camera connects easily to your HDTV for instant viewing.
