While many websites provide ring tones for mobile phones for a small fee, it is possible to create ring tones at no cost using any WAV or MIDI file. Fortunately, the process for creating ring tones for the Treo is straightforward and does not require great familiarity with computer software or the Treo. All that is required is a computer capable of downloading the free audio editing software needed to trim the WAV or MIDI file to the required length.
Instructions
Audacity
1. Open the WAV audio file using the Audacity sound editing software. (See Resources for a download link.)
2. Trim the audio file by selecting the portion of the WAV file that will be used for the ring tone, and pressing the "Trim" button located right below the volume control. Before exporting the file, ensure that the WAV file is not longer than 20 seconds in length.
3. Press the "File" button, and then select "Export" to export the trimmed WAV file.
4. Send the trimmed WAV file to the Treo by attaching the file to an email and sending the email to the address associated with the Treo.
5. Download the attached WAV file to the Treo.
Trim MIDI
6. Navigate to the online MIDI file trimmer. (See Resources for a link.)
7. Upload the MIDI that will be used for the ring tone by selecting the file from the hard drive and pressing the "Upload" button.
8. Trim the MIDI file to 20 seconds by entering "Cut From" and "To" times in the spaces provided on the website.
9. Press the "Create Midi" button, and then press the "Save" button to save the modified MIDI file on the computer hard drive.
10. Email the edited MIDI file to the email account associated with the Treo, and download the file.
Wavosaur
11. Load the MIDI or WAV file in the Wavosaur software. (See Resources for a download link.)
12. Select a 20-second clip of the loaded sound file and click the "Trim" button to trim the file.
13. Select "Save" from the file menu.
14. Email the trimmed sound file to the email address associated with the Treo.
15. Download the file onto the Treo.
